23–111. Henry Steiner, series of banknotes for the Standard Chartered Bank
The mythical animals have evolved over the three-odd decades since the designs were first printed. Many details on the banknotes have cultural relevance. The spherical “see-through” features (in register on both faces) at the front top right represent the Chinese elements: water, earth, fire, wood, metal. The consecutive historical scenes on the reverse look alternately toward the harbor and the peak. Additionally, at the bottom of the reverse there is a set of five different latticework patterns.
