The designs were inspired by calligraphic inscriptions of ancient Chinese seal script (hsiao chuan), oracle bone writing (chiaku-wen), and bronzeware script (chin-wen; see pp. 34–37). These scripts were adapted to create symbols for the Olympic sport that could be recognized by a vast and diverse audience.
