This is the first printed volume of Augustine’s The City of God and one of four books printed by Sweynheym and Pannartz at the Benedictine monastery at Subiaco. This initial page is elegantly decorated with gold leaf and colors, illuminated initials, and a portrait of Augustine. The text is in the second typeface designed and cast by Sweynheym and Pannartz.
